There were more than 80 lots catalogued for sale between bulls and heifers at the GVM Arena, Tullamore.

Overall, the bulls sold from €2,000 to €5,600 and were bolstered by a strong and sustained interest from the pedigree sector. Heifers were more mixed, with mature well-bred lots selling well while the younger females generally failed to attract any significant interest.

Bulls

The sale topper, Kye Harry 721, from Padraig McGrath, Cloonshannagh, Elphin, Co Roscommon, sold for €5,600.

This 13-month-old bull is sired by the successful UK-bred Free Town Hotspur. He had previously sired the top-priced bulls at both Nenagh and Kilmallock for the Kye herd last spring. This bull was sold to pedigree Hereford breeder John Hayes from Ratoath, Co Meath.

David Larkin, the Hermitage, Kilcormac, Birr, Co Offaly, secured the next highest price in the male section with Cill Cormaic Napoleon.

This January 2015-born bull was one of the oldest bulls catalogued for sale. He sold for €4,500 to joint purchasers John Johnston and Glenn Jacob. Both men are from Co Wexford and both are intending to use this bull on their respective pedigree Hereford herds.

The championship under show judge John Holloway, Horseleap, Moate, Co Westmeath, was awarded to Portanob Revival from John Canty, Pubblestown, Kildalkey, Co Meath. The champion sold for €3,800.

Another bull from the Portanob herd, Portanob Hugo, sold for €4,000 to pedigree Hereford breeder Brian Clarke from Kells, Co Meath. Both bulls were sired by Balleen Revival.

Reserve champion bull Beaghmore Remeo 2, exhibited by Margaret T McCabe, Beaghmore, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim, provided the third best price of the sale − €4,150.

This bull was born in June 2015 and is sired by the AI bull Gageboro Morgan. He was sold to another pedigree Hereford breeder, Francis Scott & Sons, Rathdowney, Co Laois.

Sean Neary, Strokestown, Co Roscommon, took home €3,800 for his 16-month-old bull Clooncullane King 322. This Kilsunny Goliath son sold to pedigree Hereford breeder Trevor Dudley, Thurles, Co Tipperary.

Heifers

In the female section, the champion provided the best price, with David Larkin, Kilcormac, Co Offaly, selling Cill Cormaic Niamh for €3,500.

This heifer was born in February 2015 and is sired by Cedar Liam who stands as senior stock sire at the Cill Cormaic Hereford herd. Larkin also received €2,900 for another February 2015-born heifer, Cill Cormaic Natasha, who is also sired by Cedar Liam.

Sam and Nigel Heatrick, Annareagh, Glaslough, Co Monaghan, received €3,000 for their senior in-calf heifer Glaslough Pepsi.

This Kye Sting 595 daughter was born in October 2014 and is due to calve in late spring 2016 to Ballyaville Ger.

The Heatrick duo also sold Glaslough Peppa, a January 2015-born heifer, for €2,100.

The reserve champion heifer, Caonachpoll 1 Anna, exhibited by W and D Jones, Keenagh, Co Longford, sold for €2,750. This in-calf heifer is sired by AI bull Kilsunny Goliath.

Henry and Mervyn Parr, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, received €2,800 for their second prize winning heifer Tourtanepoll 1 Winnie.

Philip Smyth, Navan, Co Meath, took home €2,500 for his in-calf heifer Ardmulchan Clover 651. This heifer was born in September 2014 and is sired by the UK-bred stock sire Church Preen Galileo.

One of the youngest heifers in the sale (and the only heifer calf to sell on the day), Lisnalurg Bea 6, exhibited by Pauline Casey, Co Sligo, sold for €2,000. This 12-month-old heifer is sired by Kye Rodge 553 and was sold to Gerry McNamara, Ennis, Co Clare.

Also selling at €2,000 were Thomas Farrell’s Pike 1 Tulip and Johnny Dolan’s Meadowhill Katy.
