The number of calves on offer in the marts in recent weeks has reduced dramatically. In contrast to earlier in the spring, the numbers of two- to three-week-old calves available has been very small in recent weeks, with the majority of stock sold being stronger types.
Angus and Hereford calves are in the largest supply currently and prices are running at €200/head for Angus bulls to €270/head on average for Hereford bulls.
Hereford heifers made about €50/head less than bulls. Angus heifers are selling for approximately €5 to €10 less than the equivalent bull calf.
Four-year-old Friesian bulls are currently making €140 to €150/head, with stronger well-conformed calves the best trade. Continentals are selling from €250 to €350/head.
