A Co Limerick famer in his 70s has been arrested following a shooting incident in Killballycasey, Kildimo, Co Limerick, in which another farmer was injured and his dog shot dead.

The arrested man has been named locally as Teddy O’Donoghue, a man in his 50s, while the injured man has been named locally as John Hayes, aged in his 60s.

It is understood that the farmers have adjoining land at Killballycasey and their families share a public road to access their farms.

The incident is believed to be the culmination of a long-running dispute over a right of way, which extends back around 10 to 15 years. It is believed that there have been previous complaints about vehicles being parked on the roadway preventing access to houses on the road.

The injured farmer, John Hayes, is a dairy farmer, while the arrested farmer, Teddy O’Donoghue, keeps weanling cattle.

Gardaí have confirmed that man in his 70s has been arrested and is being held at Newcastlewest Garda station under section 30 of the Criminal Justice Act.

They also confirmed that a farmer sustained gunshot-related injuries which are not life threatening and he is being treated at University Hospital Limerick.

Locals have described the incident as “shocking and terribly sad”.
