A central theme of the recommendations is an increased emphasis on crops products that carry value premiums for growers. Among the actions proposed is the need to increase the production of malting barley and specific wheat varieties to meet the growing demand from distillers, maltsters and brewers, including users seeking to source a native malt supply.
There is also a need to develop processing facilities for the production of high-value products for the export market such as food oats for health and wellness and cold-pressed oilseed rape for the human nutrition market.
The need for increased native protein production to provide native traceable product for feedstuffs was also stated. Coupled with this is the need for increased use of rotations and break crops to meet greening requirements. There is also an associated need to identify new break crop opportunities.
It also stated that efforts should continue to examine the feasibility of re-establishing sugar beet production and processing.
For potatoes, there is a need to increase production for specialist use, such as processing and salad markets, and also seed potatoes.
