Update Success !
Overall, 81 heifers went under the hammer from the two herds with 54 finding new homes on the night. The Roundhill herd of Timothy and Doreen Corridan experienced the two high points of the sale in what could otherwise being seen as a value sale for purchasers.
Making the top price was Roundhill Egiroflee 1164 ET. This seven-year-old daughter of Mas Du Clo sold with her young Roundhill Hamlet daughter at foot. No stranger to success, Egiroflee was junior champion at Tullamore show 2011 and won the National senior cow class at Tullamore 2015. Backed with proven breeding, her grand-dam Giroflee was imported from France and is the dam of well-known AI bull Nenuphar. Egiroflee’s full sister made €8,000 at the sale back in 2012.
Like mother, like daughter
She is now a proven breeder, having produced a daughter for €8,200 as well as lot 18 Roundhill Jgiroflee 1532, who earlier in the day sold for the second top price of €16,000 (video below). This October 2014 heifer is sired by well-known AI bull Elite Forever Brill and sold to Michael McNally, Co Tyrone.
Next best was Roundhill Hamlet daughter Roundhill Kunanime 1643. Carrying five stars for terminal and replacement indexes, this stylish November 2015 heifer was met with a flurry of bids before being knocked down at €6,100. She was backed with proven bloodlines with her maternal sister topping the 2012 sale at €10,600 and her ¾ sister claiming the junior all-Ireland heifer championship back in 2014.
Gazelle sister
Overall the Roundhill herd saw a 55% clearance with an average price of €4,300.
Among the Castleview heifers of Sean O’Sullivan, Castleisland, Co Kerry, trade peaked at €3,500 for the last lot into the ring. This heifer, Castleview Lauren, was an Ampertaine Commander daughter out of a Ronnick Hawk G7 cow. This maked her a full sister to NCBC bull Castleview Gazelle, who ranks as the number one used Limousin sire in AI in 2016.
Born February 2016, she sold with five stars on both replacement and terminal indexes while maintaining a 4.5% calving index figure. Next best from the Castleview outfit was lot 26 Castleview June at €3,400. This December 2014-born heifer is by sire Bavardage and goes back on the same dam as Lauren. The dam herself was a prize winner at the National championships as a heifer.
The Castleview herd saw a big increase on clearance with 87% of the heifers presented finding new homes. However average prices were back on that of Roundhill to just over €2,500.
