This year the Irish Aberdeen Angus brought their annual All-Ireland finals to the East, with Trim show playing as the host showground. The competition brings together the best of Aberdeen Angus cattle that both southern and Northern Ireland have to offer.

Taking the role of judge and looking after proceedings for the day was Alan Morrison of the noted Drumeer herd in Northern Ireland. He found his champion on the day in the form of Albert and Jennifer DeCogan’s stock bull Wedderlie Black Box (photo above). Black Box is no stranger to the show ring, having picked up countless championships around the country over the past two years. This included the championship at this year’s Tullamore show.

Sired by Abberton Mr Bionic, the now seven-year-old was purchased by the DeCogans who run the Mogeely herd in Castlemartyr, Co Cork. This marks the seventh time the husband and wife duo have claimed the prestigious All-Ireland perpetual trophy, the last time being 2014 where they accomplished a three-in-a-row with former stock bull Rosemead Karona.

Standing reserve to Black Box was the cow class winner Birches Lady Heather from the Matchett family, Portadown, Co Armagh (photo below).

Having claimed reserve senior champion earlier in the day, judge Alan Morrison tapped her forward as reserve overall against a strong junior champion. Lady Heather enjoyed phenomenal success at a number of shows over the past four years. It was all Cork blood behind this one with the Matchett’s stock bull Carrigroe Fred bred by John Applebee as sire and dam Mogeely Lady Hilda bred by Albert and Jennifer DeCogan.

Junior championship

In the junior section Matthew Goulding, Tralee, Co Kerry was once again triumphant with his February-born Goulding Proud Boy (photo below).

This stylish young calf has picked up a number of top accolades over the past month including the reserve overall championship to Black Box in Tullamore, and reserve junior champion at the All-Ireland bull calf championships last week in Iverk. Proud Boy is one of the first sons out of new imported stock bull Oakchurch Dirk and out of homebred Goulding Pamela J372.

Taking the reserve sash for the junior section was the second prize-winner in Proud Boy’s class Bunlahy Ninja Warrior (photo below).

Bred by Gerard & Helen Reynolds, Ballinalee, Co. Longford, Warrior is a March bull calf sired by Dovea AI bull Bunlahy John G. Out of a homebred dam he also picked up the calf championship at Mohill last month.

Stockperson classes

The day also played host to two separate stockperson classes, a junior and senior. Claiming top spot in the junior section was highly regarded breeder and show man Conor Craig, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford. In the senior section it was the well-known John McEnroe from Oldcastle out in front, with Sean taking the red rosette.
