Allowing calves to forward graze leafy material, leaving more stem for cows, can help. Offering some form of roughage to cows at grass will help by slowing down the passage of grass through the cow, allowing her to absorb more minerals.
Cows should be supplemented with some form of magnesium to further reduce the risk. If offering lick buckets to cows, one bucket should be provided for every 10 cows.
