Last week’s special weanling sale at Ballyjamesduff Mart saw a strong entry of over 200 bulls and over 140 heifers. Demand was very strong and prices reflected that. One feature of the sale was the very high quality of most of the animals given that it was a special show and sale. The strong trade resulted in over 93% of those on offer being sold on the day.
Of the 200 or so bulls on offer, demand was strongest from farmers for good-quality Charolais types. Bulls over 400kg were a firm trade and sold mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.40/kg, with top-quality types making over €2.50/kg. Feeder buyers were active for forward and top-quality lots. Lighter bulls from 300kg to 400kg were a strong trade also and prices were up on the previous week. Prices ranged mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg, with U grades making up to €2.70/kg. Light bulls sold from €2.35/kg for plain bulls to €2.90/kg for top-quality lots.
Demand for weanling heifers was brisk also. Those from 300kg to 400kg sold mainly from €2.40/kg to €2.65/kg, with the top third making up to €2.80/kg. Light heifers continue to be met with firm farmer demand and prices are ranging mainly from €2.50/kg to €2.70/kg for better-quality types. Commission rates are 1.8% to the seller with a minimum of €10 and a maximum of €16 and €9 to the buyer.
