The past week, and particularly over the bank holiday weekend, has seen increased farmer buyer activity at marts across the country.
Mart managers, particularly in the west, have seen a slight improvement in prices as a result. However, the quality of cattle on offer right across the country is dropping.
While top-quality suckler bred weanlings and stores are still on offer, mart managers have said that numbers have started to tighten.
The cow trade is said to be holding quite firm after successive weeks of an easing of prices.
Factory agents remain active for all good-quality fleshed types, while feeders are continuing to source store cows at a price.
The numbers of Frieisian culls coming out in the south are expected to increase again in the coming weeks after scanning and housing.
Steers
Store bullocks have seen prices strengthen only slightly in the past week. The average 600kg bullock is currently making €1,188, about €100 less than the same time last year. However, top-quality U grade bullocks continue to be a strong trade and have not seen prices ease to the same degree. Lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg have seen prices improve by about €20/head on last week. However, plainer Angus, Hereford and Friesians continue to be met with a weaker trade.
Heifers
While store bullocks have improved, heifers have remained steady. The average 550kg heifer is making €1,194, only slightly ahead of the equivalent bullock and €144/head less than the same time last year. Top-quality U grade heifers are making up to €2.40/kg in some areas, while plainer and lesser-quality types are selling from €1.75/kg to €1.80/kg, back by up to 30c/kg on last year. Lighter heifers from 400kg to 500kg remain steady also and are selling from €2.00/kg to €2.10/kg for average-quality types.
Weanlings
The weanling trade has seen some improvements. However, there are increased numbers of lesser-quality types on offer, particularly in the south. Farmer demand for good-quality weanlings has improved, with many mart managers saying that prices are up on last week. The average 350kg bull sold for €681 and prices are only back by €30 to €40 on the same week last year. Exporter demand has been strong in the past week, with large numbers being secured. In some cases, plainer-quality weanlings are being sourced.
