Gortatlea Mart saw another large sale on Friday last with the yard packed with cattle. Cows dominated the sale day, with over 330 cows going through the sales ring.
Factory agents and finishers were very active for all fleshed and short-keep types. The trade was exceptional on the day, with dry cows making up to €795 with their weight.
Suckler culls, especially continentals, were a very good trade, with many making €300 to €500 with their weight and younger cows or those with good condition sold for anywhere from €1.90 up to €2.14/kg.
As with young stock, R and U grade-potential cows attracted premium prices, with strong competition at times during the sale. Friesian cows were consistently making over and above the €200 mark with their weight.
There were also over 300 weanlings on offer, which were met with strong farmer demand. Weanling bulls made up to €755 with their weight. Weanling heifers sold for up to €850 over the weight. E and U grade heifers were top sellers, with a top price per kilo of €3.08/kg. Bullocks and heifers were available in smaller numbers, with continentals selling for up to €2.33/kg, while traditional breeds were closer to €2/kg.
