There is a planned investment of up to €4.5bn for regional and local roads under the National Development Plan (NDP).

The governement has stated that they foresee the funding will support: "Major transport focus linking all parts of Ireland & filling gaps in North West."

A number of roads have been highlighted for continued work under the plan, these include:

  • The Sallins bypass.
  • Adamstown and Nangor road improvements.
  • Portlaoise southern distributor road.
  • Shannon crossing.
  • Laytown to Bettystown link road.
  • Garavogue Bridge scheme.
  • Dingle relief roa.d
  • Athy southern distributor road.
  • Sligo western distributor road.
  • Coonagh to Knockalisheen main contract.
  • Realignment of R498 Nenagh/Thurles road at Latteragh.
  • Killaloe dypass/R494 upgrade.
  • Carrigaline western distributor road.
  • In addition, a number of projects are currently under appraisal to receive funding, some of which include:

  • R157 Maynooth road, Dunboyne (safety upgrade).
  • R162 Navan to Kingscourt road (safety upgrade).
  • Thurles relief road.
  • Carlow southern relief road.
  • Tralee northern relief road.
  • In terms of public transport, one of the biggest changes will be that from July 2019, diesel-only buses will no longer be purchased for use in public transport services.

Instead, it will only be permitted to buy and use electric or electric-hybrid vehicles in an effort to lower carbon emissions.

Investment will continue to support public transport in rural areas, including funding for the Local Link Programme (previously the Rural Transport Programme).

Subject to available investment, there will also be a new town bus service, which will focus on urban areas like Carlow, Kilkenny and Mullingar.

It’s hoped that this new bus service will help to support local residents and visitors, but will require investment in a bus fleet and infrastructure, including new bus shelters and stops.
