Even as the golden sand slips between your toes on Copacabana beach, or as you place a firm hand upon the towering statue of Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro maintains a dreamy aura.
The city is steeped in magic that never wavers and cultured vibes linger. To indulge in the revitalising reality of Brazil’s most visited city is the day-dream of every person consumed by wanderlust.
The trip to Brazil’s capital is a long haul, but good things come to those who wait and below are a few of the iconic sights that await you on your arrival.
Christ the Redeemer
One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Christ the Redeemer is 38m tall, and you will have to strain your neck to see the whole way to the top.
The iconic statue sits at the peak of Mount Corcovado, overlooking the entire city, so you will be able to get a bird’s eye view of Rio while you are up there. A train departs regularly from the foot of the mountain – but be cautious when choosing which day to visit this monument, because if it is cloudy you could be hanging around for Christ the Redeemer to come out of the clouds.
Copacabana Beach
Copacabana is a hub of constant activity. Soccer and volleyball players cover areas of the beach, adding a sense of magnetism to the location.
Tourists can choose to chill on the sand or dive into the waves and, when the hunger hits, there is an array of food places to choose from along the stretch.
When the day begins to collapse and the evening invades, you may be lucky enough to catch the sky in an array of purples.
The beach is lit at night and police patrol the area. However, it is advised not to stray too far after dark.
Sugarloaf Mountain
This tourist hotspot is highly recommended, so you would be foolish to miss out.
Ride the cable car to the top with one stop along the way. There are various cafés, restaurants and souvenir shops on site, and the location is very spacious so you will not feel cramped – despite the constant flow of people.
Helicopter rides are available on Sugarloaf for those who want to get that little bit extra out of their visit. There is no better place to bask in the dreamy scenery of Rio, which is a far cry from home.
Escadaria Selarón
Covered in more than 2,000 pieces of tiles, mirrors and ceramics, this world-famous staircase is the work of Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón, who claimed it as “my tribute to the Brazilian people”.
The project began as a pastime, but Selarón got addicted to continuing and it was completed in the 2000s.
The crowds are always fierce and it can be quite difficult to take a good selfie with so many people hovering, but do not let that put you off as it is a gem within the city. CL
Packages including flights and seven day hotel accommodation start from €2,500.
