The shortage of farm vets in rural Ireland has led many practice owners to recruit vets from other countries to fill staff shortages.
Figures obtained from Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI) show that there were 331 non-Irish national vets providing veterinary services in Ireland at the end of last year.
VCI member Bert Stewart said that foreign vets are providing a vital service in rural Ireland but added that the issue for practice owners is that many non-Irish national vets move home or go on somewhere else after a few years.
“We need more vets that are in it for the long haul,” he
said.
