County Galway has the highest number of beef cows in Ireland for the second year running, according to the latest statistics from ICBF.
In total, the tribe county has 103,449, which is 25,000 higher than Co Mayo, which had the second highest beef cow population.
The five counties with the highest numbers were:
Galway – 103,449
Mayo – 77,397
Clare – 72,335
Cork – 70,001
Tipperary – 56,734
Overall, suckler numbers dropped in 21 counties in Ireland, falling by 10,400 between 2016 and 2017.
It marks a worrying trend, given that beef calf registrations to date have also dropped in 2018.
