Beef 2018 is sure to be an interesting and informative day for anybody with an interest in beef. Among the attractions on the day will be the main Teagasc research stands, livestock and health and safety demonstations, cookery stands and demonstrations and technical villages.
BETTER Farm Beef Challenge
One of the technical villages at Beef 2018 will play host to the Teagasc Irish Farmers Journal BETTER Farm Beef Challenge. This is the thrid phase of the hugely successful programme which aims to develop a road map for profitable beef production through improving technical efficiency within the farm gate.
The third phase of the programme began in Janurary 2017 and it has now reached the mid-point of its duration. Along with all of the farmer participants, BETTER Farm Teagasc advisers Alan Dillon, John Greany and Tommy Cox and members of the Irish Farmers Journal team will be on hand in the village throughout the course of the day to give demonstations and answer any questions about the programme.
Stands
The BETTER Farm Beef Challenge gave participants six challenges each upon the commencement of the programme. The BETTER Farm village will have stands erected displaying the progress of the farmers in challenge areas such as finance, grassland fertility and labour requirements. There will also be a farmer forum where BETTER Farmers Joe Healy, Padraig O'Connor and James Flaherty will talk to the crowd about their experience of the programme so far.
Prizes
If the lure of the programme still isn't enough to convince you to stop by the BETTER Farm village, then perhaps the mention of prizes might seal the deal? There will be a display in the village centred around cow efficiency. There will be four cows present in a specially erected demonstation stand in the centre of the villlage where the crowd will be asked to give their guesses on the efficiency of each animal. The demonstation can be both informative and fun and, needless to say, there will be prizes for correct guesses.
Beef 2018 is taking place on Tuesday 26 June from 10am in Teagasc Grange, Dunsany, Co Meath.
