John Jordan, who takes over the position of chief executive at Ornua on Saturday, has called on Irish dairy exporters to keep working together.
“Some of Ornua’s members have their own routes to market,” Jordan told the Irish Farmers Journal. “I think Ornua and the Kerrygold brand are the best way – we export to 110 countries. In any case, we should avoid competition in the markets we go into.”
The recent recovery in Ornua’s purchase price index is set to continue, according to Jordan.
“We’ve seen a good bounce and things are looking good for prices in the second half.” However he warned of any disruptions to trade, which would add costs. Despite the threat of a hard Brexit, “by way of geography, the UK will remain a large market for us and the wider dairy industry”, Jordan said. He also hoped that dairy products would stay out of the escalating trade war between the US and the EU.
