The Clonagh herd of Garret and Lyndsey were on their usual form in the Simmental rings at this year’s Tullamore Show, with the duo claiming the overall male and overall female titles. The Simmental finals saw more than 100 cattle present.

Along with claiming the overall championship, the Behans went on to win an array of other top accolades. This is nothing new for the outfit, who have now collected the national title on seven of the last 10 occasions, including the last three.

Leading the way was their senior cow champion Clonagh Darling Eyes ET. This is the second year in a row the six-year-old has claimed the title.

Sired by three-time overall national champion and former Clonagh stock bull Banwy T-Rex, Darling Eyes is out of one of the herd’s most prolific cows Miltown Senhorita. This was only the tip of the iceberg for the Clonagh clan, however, with their 16-strong show team going on to pick up the overall male championship and a total of seven first prizes. Top of the males was the herd’s stock bull Bruchag Glenfiddich, who came out in front of the senior bull class before being awarded male of the year. This three-year-old bull is sired by Teviot Challenger and out of a Drumsleed Royal daughter, Bruchag Alana.

Reserve

Awarded the reserve female championship and the reserve overall championship was Tisaran Her Majesty. This 20-month-old heifer continued her winning ways from 2017 when she was awarded the all-Ireland calf champion. Bred and exhibited by Martin Mooney, Birr, Co Offaly, Her Majesty is sired by Curaheen Wakeman. Dam of the stylish heifer is Fearna Faith, a double all-Ireland winner herself. Her Majesty is no stranger to winning this summer, securing championships and interbreeds at a number of shows.

Mount Jericho was also a force to be reckoned with, going on to be awarded the reserve overall male champion title. Bred and exhibited by Joe and James Kelly, this wide September 2017-born bull is sired by Clonagh Direct debit while the dam is Curaheen Geraldine. Having first placed top of a strong yearling bull class, Jericho stood behind the senior bull champion in the male championship.

National titles

The Clonagh team were back on hand to win a further three of the national titles on offer. First in was Clonagh Gucci Eyes ET who went on to be crowned national senior heifer champion and claim the Jenna Stone Memorial trophy. This trophy is presented in memory of Lyndsey’s late sister, and so carries special meaning to the Behan outfit. Gucci Eyes is sired by Banwy T-Rex and again out of Milton Senhorita, making her a full sister to the overall champion Darling Eyes.

Another from the Eyes family, Clonagh Hazel Eyes secured poll position in the national intermediate class. This heifer is sired by Kilbride Dragoon and is a daughter of Darling Eyes.

Last of the national titles to go the Behans’ way was the weanling bull title for Clonagh Joker Rex. This stylish young bull is sired by Clonagh Direct debit and out of the aforementioned prolific cow Milton Senhorita.

Mark Neenan topped the junior cow national class with Fearna Gracious ET. This tank of a cow is sired by Curaheen Vio while the dam is former show cow Fearna Tiffany ET. This line is consistently delivering on the show circuit, as can be seen also by this year’s reserve overall champion.

Clare breeder Denis O’Halloran picked up a national title for his junior bull Tulla Jaguar P. This April 2017-born bull sire is Curaheen Evolution while the dam is Tulla Felicity.

Seaview Jolene continued her run of form from the Munster show circuit to pick up the national yearling heifer championship. Bred and exhibited by the O’Leary family from Co Cork, this sweet heifer has claimed a number of breed and interbreed titles over the summer months. Born September 2017, this one is out of Kilbride Farm Delboy and out of Kildera Avril. The O’Leary outfit also came out on top of the national pairs class.
