Ashtown Katie took the supreme champion title at the Irish Aberdeen Angus finals at Mohill Show, which had nearly 100 entries catalogued.
This second-calver from Michael and Niamh Barron, The Rower, Co Kilkenny, has been shown since she was a young heifer and has picked up an array of awards. Along with securing the red rosette at the Irish Aberdeen Angus finals in Cork three years ago, she went on to be collect the supreme Irish Angus champion and RDS champion of champions award in 2017.
Judge Clive Jennings from Enniskeane, Co Cork, described her as a “hard-working and productive cow with plenty of breed character and fantastic ring presence.” Sired by Goulding Jumbo King, Katie was shown alongside her January-born heifer calf.
Taking the reserve overall championship, having earlier claimed the junior championship, was Millbawn Aurora T238. Bred and exhibited by Conor Craig and Amanda Bogan, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, this stylish November 2017-born heifer held off stiff competition in both her class and the junior championship. Sired by Netherton Mr Brazilian, Aurora is out of a Gigginstown-bred dam by Friarstown Empire. This topped an exceptional week for the outfit having a week earlier secured the reserve senior championship at Tullamore Show with their tidy first-calver Millbawn Nancy.
Back to the senior championship and standing reserve to the overall champion was Pat and Finbarr Cahill’s Drumhill Lord Harry R635. This three-year-old stock bull for the duo’s Shankill herd secured the overall senior champion title at Tullamore Show a week earlier. Sired by Nightingale Proud Jake, he is out of Netherallan Peter Pershore-bred dam Blelack Lady Heather J169. Originally bred by Johnathan and Lisa Doyle, Northern Ireland, Lord Harry was purchased at Stirling bull sales for 8,500gns.
The final championship of the day went the way of Cathal and Cormac Duignan of the local Laheens herd. Their September 2017-born bull Laheens Pierre was awarded the reserve junior championship. This stylish young bull came out of one of the strongest classes of the day, which saw 13 exhibits forward. Sired by Cogent AI bull Rawburn Enigmatic, Pierre goes back on a Deveron Latimer bred dam who goes back to the famous Laheens Nora.
