The UK government intends to monitor the level of fodder being imported to Ireland from the UK.
Responding to a parliamentary question the UK minister of state for farming George Eustice said: “I will monitor whether the fodder import scheme that has been introduced in Ireland has an appreciable effect on supplies of fodder and bedding within the UK.”
Farmers in the UK, Ireland and across northern Europe, have experienced a difficult time this year with the hot, dry weather.”
The Department of Agriculture in Ireland has set aside €4.25m to import up to 80,000t of fodder to help alleviate looming fodder shortages.
Minister Michael Creed has recently stated that co-ops importing fodder have already identified 40,000t in countries such as Spain, France and Italy.
The UK has experienced similar drought conditions and Irish co-ops have indicated that fodder supplies in other countries, particularly the UK, are tighter than the previous crisis of 2013 or the spring crisis this year.
