There has been a spike in tractor thefts, according to An Garda Síochána. Six tractors were reported as stolen in October. It brings to 23 the total number tractors stolen to date this year. So far, 15 of these have been recovered.

Thieves have changed to targeting older tractors which have little or no security, according to the Garda Stolen Vehicle Investigation Unit. They are also focusing on smaller tractors which are easier to transport.

“We have noticed this increase in the theft of small tractors in the west Dublin, Meath and Kildare areas,” said Garda Eugene O’Sullivan.

“The latest stolen was a 1975 Massey Ferguson 135 fitted with a blue Tanco 895 front loader and old style canvas cab which had been modified slightly.

“This tractor was taken on bank holiday Monday from the Rathcoole area of Dublin. It was fitted with a battery cutout switch which had been removed by the owner. However, that did not put off the thieves as they dragged the tractor out of a shed and on to a low loader or recovery truck. The tractor has been owned by the same family for over 40 years and has sentimental value. That is what is most upsetting for the owners.”

The theft of quad bikes has increased with 54 reported stolen this year. However, the recovery rate has also improved with 39 recovered to date.

Garda O’Sullivan asked that any information or sightings in relation to the above or other thefts be forwarded to the Stolen Motor Vehicle Investigation Unit at 01-666 3323 or emailed to nbci_stolen_vehicle@garda.ie
