The Scottish Government is considering a cap of £5,000 for non-pedigree animals and £7,500 for pedigree cattle compulsory culled due to bovine TB.

The proposal has been made after a series of meetings between the Scottish Government and beef industry representatives.

Industry leaders were originally against a low limit as it may penalise pedigree breeders. To qualify for the pedigree limit of £7,500 animals need to be full certified.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “We’ve listened to the views of farmers and adjusted earlier proposals to introduce a cap on the compensation paid for animals culled due to bovine TB. This will be considered by the Scottish Parliament and, if approved, will come into force in November.”
