The video footage of calves being abused by staff at a port in France is as upsetting for farmers as it is for everyone else, IFA dairy chair Tom Phelan has said.
“Irish farmers are outraged to see any animal being treated so badly,” Phelan said. “We understand that the individual in question has been arrested. He should be subject to the full rigours of the law because his actions were wrong and totally unacceptable.”
He added that live exports are extremely important for Irish agriculture and are regulated by the Department to ensure animal comfort.
The ISPCA said that there should be an immediate suspension of exports and an investigation carried out into the incident.
