Of late on these pages, Netflix has been a much-discussed topic, from the best movies, to binge-worthy series. Naturally, seeing as it is one of the biggest-earning streaming services in the world. But, this innovative offering is not without competition.
NowTV is becoming more and more popular with consumers. Its profile was boosted significantly recently by it showing HBO’s latest and last series of Game of Thrones. Irish Country Living looks at what is NowTV, how it compares to Netflix and what it offers in terms of content.
What is NowTV?
NowTV is a website that allows you to watch movies, sports and series both live and on-demand, as opposed to Netflix, where you just have movies and series on demand. NowTV is more aligned to traditional TV channels, but online, obviously.
It incorporates many of Sky’s channels. Its selling points are that unlike traditional TV channels, it is contract-free, so you pay per month and cancel when you wish.
Also, the site emphasises that it is ad free. These are both much the same as Netflix.
What is its payment structure like?
There are more package options when signing up to NowTV in comparison to Netflix. With Netflix, your payment allows you to access all the site’s content, but you pay more or less depending on the number of devices you wish to use. The basic Netflix plan for one device costs €7.99 per month.
With NowTV, you pay for what you want to access, so there is an entertainment pass, Sky cinema pass, kids pass, hayu (reality TV) pass and Sky sports pass. These have different price points, for example, an entertainment pass costs €15 per month, while a Sky sports pass is €7 per month. There are also different offers you can avail of. A recent one includes two months entertainment for €18.50 with three months hayu free. NowTV can be accessed on several different devices.
How does its offering compare to Netflix?
As both NowTV and Netflix are quite different in terms of their structure, it can be quite difficult to compare their content.
As previously stated, NowTV’s offering is more similar to what you would have on traditional TV channels. The ability to watch whole channels live or on demand is definitely a huge plus. HBO, with both Game of Thrones and Chernobyl, is a draw.
However, Netflix’s bread and butter has always been movies and series. Originals are prevalent at this stage. In these fields, this writer feels Netflix’s offering is more comprehensive. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference, if you want variety – NowTV. If you want good movies – Netflix.
