Tuesday’s sale at Ennis Mart saw a good entry of stock and the trade was quite strong. Mart manager Martin McNamara said that the quality of weanlings on offer was very good and there was strong farmer demand for these.

There was a 100% sheep clearance and a 97% cattle clearance. Weanling bulls from 300kg to 400kg were available in good supply. Better-quality types sold from €2.50/kg to €2.80/kg, while plainer types sold from €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg. Lighter bulls from 250kg to 300kg were only available in low numbers and sold from €2.37/kg to €2.90/kg. Good-quality feeding bulls were a firm trade, with those over 450kg selling mainly from €2.00/kg to €2.44/kg for a top-quality 495kg Belgian Blue. Weanling heifers from 300kg to 400kg were a steady trade also, with better-quality heifers selling to as much as €2.88/kg or €1,000 for a 355kg Limousin. Other good-quality types sold mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.40/kg, with prices averaging from €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg.

The lamb sale saw prices average at €2.13/kg, with heavy butchers’ lambs selling to €119/head, while the main supply of lambs sold from €100 to €109/head.

Commission rates are 1.4% to the seller to a maximum of €13 for singles and 1.2% to a maximum of €11 for doubles, and €9 to the buyer.
