Shannon Conn, from Limvady in Co Derry, sold two pups at Skipton Auction Mart in England last week for over 3,000gns each. Her October 2017-born tri-coloured dog Cad (Lad) sold for 3,200gns to K&H Ridley of Consett, Co Durham. The dog was bred in Northern Ireland by Brendan McAllister’s Spot, out of Jake Hamilton’s Grahams Gwen.
Shannon also made 3,050gns with the very first runner on the trials field, her 15-month-old black and white dog, Tweeddale Shep, again by Brendan McAllister’s Spot, out of Dean Aitken’s Tami. This went to Scottish buyer Jock Sutherland.
The top price on the day was 10,000gns (€11,700) for a 20-month-old tri-coloured bitch, Tess, a daughter of Netherlands-based former World Sheep Dog Trials champion Serge van der Sweep’s Gary. Tess was sold by Welsh dog trainer Sion Jones to a Northern Irish buyer who asked not to be named.

Sion Jones, who farms 400 Welsh and cross-bred ewes and 20 suckler cows with his wife, Buddug, and two children, four-year-old Ela, and Dico, aged two, also led the way in the unbroken pen with a 1,600gns sale of another young, tri-coloured dog, Cefneithin Rex.
Two dogs made the joint second highest price of 6,600gns and both fell to the same Welsh buyer, Kevin Evans, of Penclyn Farm, Modrydd, Brecon, Powys. The first dog was November 2017-born, black-and-white dog, Pen-y-Borough Bodger, from North Craven’s Shaun Richards.

The second 6,600gns dog was sold by Welsh handler, Dean Edwards, from Penrhyndeudraeth.
The next best sold for 5,400gns; a 14-month-old black-and-white bitch, Liz, from Derbyshire’s David Wood, who runs a flock of 700 Cheviot sheep in Derwent. Liz found a new home in the Shetland Isles with Lerwick’s Eric Graham, who was buying the dog on behalf of his 21-year-old son, Sean. She will be put to work on the family’s flock of 940 Shetland ewes and crosses at their 2,000ac holding.
Several dogs broke the 3,000gns barrier. At 3,400gns was a two-year-old black-and-white dog, Jaxx, from Ireland’s John Irwin, of Omagh, Co Tyrone. The son of Tweeddale Jamie became another Skipton acquisition by Jim Cropper, of Bacup.
LE Blain, from Bala in Wales, made 3,300gns with a solid nursery prospect, the October 2017-born, tri-coloured dog, Madog Mot, a son of Glan y Gors Tec. This fell to buyer Joe McRoberts, who runs Cheviot Sheepdogs at Fingland, Biggar.
Antrim’s Daniel McAllister, from Cargan, sold a November 2018-born red-and-white bitch, Rua, for 1,500gns.
Overall, there were 77 dogs at the sale in Skipton; 44 field run dogs and 33 in the unbroken pen. The prices for 18 registered broken dogs ranged from 650gns to 6,600gns, averaging £2,745 (€3,060). The registered broken bitches, 13 in total, sold for an average price of £3,029 (€3,370).
In the part or unbroken dogs categories, 10 registered dogs and 10 registered bitches sold for an average of £805 (€896).
Skipton’s final working sheep dog sale is on Friday 25 October. Entries close on 11 October.
