Co-chair of the Beef Plan Movement Hugh Doyle is calling for “full transparency” on the meat industry ahead of the organisation’s protest on Wednesday.
Up to 1,500 farmers are expected to protest outside Leinster House.
“We have buses coming from all over Ireland, especially the west of Ireland,” Doyle said.
Even though this will be a peaceful protest, I think the minister will be too nervous to meet us
“We’re going to present seven requests to the Government that we think are very reasonable, calling on them to ensure there is full transparency in the meat industry.
“Everyone knows how much the primary producer gets. The people who own factories are able to shield their wealth.”
Minister Creed
Doyle said he hoped the Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed would be there to meet them but felt it was unlikely.
“Even though this will be a peaceful protest, I think the minister will be too nervous to meet us,” he said.
“We’re trying to appeal to the non-farm community and show them how bad things are for farmers at the moment.”
