Irish suckler beef should be rebranded to highlight that it is “naturally reared” beef and a protected geographical indicator (PGI) should be given to it to distinguish it from dairy-beef, according to the Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association (INHFA).

On Thursday, the association will launch a 10-point plan for the suckler sector in Buswells Hotel, Dublin.

Along with a suckler brand and PGI, the INHFA is looking for changes to the board of the ICBF and wants at least 30% of the board to represent the suckler sector. The plan also calls for changes to the €uro-Star index under the BDGP as it says that the current index favours dairy traits over beef traits.

The INHFA is also calling for the nitrates derogation to be reviewed in the context of the next CAP in terms of payments, with the group questioning if farmers in a derogation should be receiving reduced payments.
