The Beef Plan Movement has called on suckler and beef farmers to support a protest that would see farmers avoid a number of businesses on Monday 29 July.
A message circulated to a number of Beef Plan Movement WhatsApp groups calls on farmers to help the Government and general public realise the contribution farmers make to Ireland.
On Monday, farmers are asked to:
Not go to the local co-op.Not sell cattle at the local mart.Not go to the factory with cattle.Not go to the local town to shop.Posted by Beef Plan Movement Galway chair Kevin O’Brien, the statement reads: “We can all do this on Monday 29 so that people begin to realise how much we contribute and how much everybody has to lose if suckler and beef farmers go out of business.”
O’Brien told the Irish Farmers Journal the protest was planned for a national level.
Roscommon protest
On Friday, members of the Beef Plan Movement protested peacefully outside Auviro’s new spray dryer in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, which was officially opened by Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed.
Conal Tiernan of the Roscommon branch said in the region of 100 people attended the protest.
“The minister arrived at 12.20. We had a list of questions to ask him but he refused to let down the window of the car. He didn’t engage with us,” he said.
Tiernan said the group was on site from 9.30am until just before 1.00pm and held the protest over the beef price in Ireland today.
