Farmers whose cattle are about to go over 30 months are sending them to factories despite the Beef Plan Movement protest because they cannot afford to lose money on them.

That’s according to a haulier who brought cattle passed the picket at ABP in Cahir, Co Tipperary, on Thursday.

He said he was carrying 14 cattle in his lorry from three or four separate farmers.

“They are aware of the situation but they don’t want to lose money when they go over age,” he told the Irish Farmers Journal.

Pressure

“A few who are not under pressure are not sending them because of the protest. But this load will all be €50 to €60 less per head next week if they go over age.”

“At €3.50/kg they will lose 22c/kg when they go over age. That’s €77/hd. This load will drop €1,000,” he said.

The haulier waited for 40 minutes outside ABP Cahir as Beef Plan Movement members walked in front of his lorry and gardaí watched on. He was eventually allowed to pass in and deliver the cattle.
