A crowd of 20 to 40 farmers continued their protest outside the gates of Dawn Ballyhaunis on Tuesday, with crowds of up to 200 reported to be outside the factory gates on some evenings over the weekend.
Unlike other factories, there were no cattle trucks waiting outside the factory. Department of Agriculture vets refused to cross the picket, which meant no slaughtering could take place. The protest, which is now ongoing for more than a week, has seen significant disruption to slaughtering at the factory. Beef Plan members have vowed to continue the cause at the plant until beef prices paid to farmers rise back to a sustainable level.
Farmers at the protest have said that locals in the town have shown great support to the farmers outside the factory gates, with food being brought to them. In addition a local company, Big Red Barn, set up televisions for protesters on Saturday evening last to allow them watch the Mayo v Donegal match.
