The Beef Plan Movement has said it is disappointed that Minister Michael Creed has adopted the same position as Meat Industry Ireland (MII) and is refusing to meet unless factory protests are suspended.

“We are disappointed that Minister Creed has adopted the same position as MII, in that a precondition of suspending the protest is required before he will meet with us,” Beef Plan negotiator Eoin Donnelly said.

He also raised concerns over the lack of engagement from MII.

“There has been no contact from MII since mid-last week. They have self-imposed a precondition of suspending the protest before they will meet with us.

“Additionally, they have not confirmed who is the primary contact that we should expect correspondence from as we asked them to do.”

13 policy and technical issues

Donnelly said that Minister Creed was aware of the issues that the Beef Plan had raised.

“Our correspondence with Minister Creed is an invite for him to review the 13 policy and technical issue points highlighted so that he can confirm what lies within his legal remit to discuss.

“This was sent in clear knowledge that he is not to discuss price per kg with us at any time.

“We have simply offered to meet Minister Creed to discuss the 13 points raised. He has declined to meet without a precondition,” Donnelly concluded.
