The 5c/kg cut in the steer and heifer base quote discussed last week in negotiations is being enacted this week.

Reports suggest that about 50% of steers are now moving at a base of €3.45/kg, with the remainder at last week’s base of €3.50/kg.

It is a similar story for heifers, with prices split between a base of €3.50/kg and €3.55/kg.

Cows

In contrast, cows remain a solid trade.

P+3 grading cows are trading from €2.80/kg to €2.85/kg on average, while O grading cows are averaging from €2.95/kg to €3.05/kg.

Many plants are trying to buy R grading cows at €3.05/kg to €3.10/kg, but an extra 5c/kg to 10c/kg is being paid for the best-quality lots.

Bull trade

Bulls remain a challenging trade, with those finished in an under-16-month system quoted a base ranging from €3.40/kg to €3.45/kg.

Some plants remain slow to compete for these bulls and have a better appetite for bulls less than 24 months, which are selling, in general, from €3.45/kg to €3.50/kg for R grades and €3.50/kg to €3.60/kg for U grades.

O grading bulls remain at a wider price differential of €3.20/kg to €3.35/kg.

Factory protests

Meanwhile, protests have resumed at a number of plants today.
