Scottish Borders farmer and Farmers Journal contributor Robert Neill has lost 900 straw bales to a suspected arson attack.

The fire was started at his farm on Wednesday evening 25 September and destroyed both the bales and the shed.

“The good thing is nobody was hurt. But it is awful knowing that somebody deliberately started the fire,” said Neill.

“The shed was torched the day after we put the straw in, so it's not natural combustion. It is going to be a real hassle replacing the 900 bales.”

At current market price, the bales are worth over £9,000 (€10,126) plus tens of thousands more to replace the shed.

Six fire crews were called to put out the blaze plus neighbours rallied round to help with the clear up.
