Tuesday’s weanling show and sale at Roscommon Mart saw an entry of over 500 bulls and heifers on offer.

Mart manager Maura Quigley said that the quality of stock on offer was very high and, because of the poor weather conditions, numbers on offer were strong.

According to Maura, the trade was brisk for both weanling bulls and weanling heifers, resulting in a high clearance rate.

Farmer buyers were a little more active than recent weeks, with exporters once again very active and anxious for stock.

Heavy bull weanlings over 500kg sold mainly from €2.00/kg to €2.20/kg for average-quality types, with better-quality types selling for up to €2.50/kg.

This weanling heifer, born January 2019 and weighing 385kg sold for €1,000 (€2.60/kg).

There was a good entry of bulls from 450kg to 500kg on offer. These were a slightly better trade on a price-per-kilo basis than heavier types. These sold for €2.18/kg on average, with better-quality bulls selling mainly from €2.20/kg to €2.35/kg.

Bulls from 400kg to 450kg were met with a little more farmer demand. As a result, prices were a little stronger and averaged over €2.30/kg.

This Limousin cross bull, born December 2018 and weighing 435kg on average sold for €1000 (€2.30/kg).

The top third sold mainly from €2.40/kg to €2.60/kg with some well-muscled bulls making over €2.80/kg.

Again, demand for plainer continental bulls was a little weaker and prices of these ranged from €1.85/kg to €2.00/kg.

Bulls from 300kg to 400kg were a good trade, with plenty of numbers on offer. Prices averaged €2.53/kg, with the top third selling from €2.80/kg to €3.10/kg.

Light bulls under 300kg were a strong trade. Prices averaged from €2.60/kg to €2.65/kg, with the top third averaging just shy of €3.00/kg.

Weanling heifers were a strong trade also, with farmer buyers noticeably more active than recent weeks.

Those over 400kg sold mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.40/kg and to over €2.66/kg for the top third of weanling heifers.

Heifers from 300kg to 400kg sold for €2.44/kg on average, with U grades making from €2.69/kg upwards.

Again, the trade for light heifers was very strong, with prices averaging at €2.60/kg, with the top third selling for €2.90/kg on average.

Commission rates are 1.9% to the seller and €9 to the buyer.
