The first free training events on the responsible use of antimicrobials on beef and sheep farms have begun this week, with 16 dates and venues organised between now and the end of the year (see CAFRE website for details).

To register, contact AI Services on: 028 9083 3123 or email: amr@ai-services.co.uk.

This initial programme of events is effectively a pilot, ahead of a wider rollout of training for beef and sheep farmers.

From February 2020, the LMC has confirmed that the training will be a mandatory requirement for members of the NI beef and lamb farm quality assurance scheme (FQAS).

Farmers who complete the current training on offer will not have to do it again, and once the training becomes mandatory, it is understood that farmers will have up to three years to get it done.

However, with 12,000 members of the FQAS, the LMC will be keen to avoid a late rush in year three, so farmers will be encouraged to register and attend an event as early as possible.

It is understood that the events from 2020 onwards will also be free to attend.

The training will be delivered by vets, and focus on best practice when using antibiotics on farms.
