Update Success !
Borris-in-Ossory Men’s Shed have been up and running since 2018. A few men from the area, having recognised an opening in the area for a shed, had a few meetings and Michael Ward put himself forward for the role as secretary. A committee of five people was formed, which later grew to a “very hard-working” six.
“We are fortunate to have our own premises and are debt-free,” shared Michael.
This is thanks to the building being idle beforehand and the owner being very open and supportive of the initiative. The shed has 24 members with 10 core members attending most days. They visited other sheds to get ideas on what to do but ultimately their shed is very much “member-focused and driven” and is free-flowing without set projects to do.
The shed has a range of members and Michael believes that the shed is for “anyone but especially men of any age who have no outlet. This is important in the countryside”.
The shed boasts a kitchen, games room with darts and pool, an extensive library and the workshop area.
Last Christmas members made reindeers from logs, which were popular and led to many orders, partially thanks to the premium location of the shed opposite the local primary school. Members often refurbish furniture and garden tools.
Michael explains: “They will try their hand at anything. They will do a good job and won’t just paint it.”
Members often just come down for a cup of tea and a chat and they have put in a stove so that the shed is lovely and warm. “The craic will be good and the kettle will be boiled,” says Michael.
The shed opening hours are fluid but it is generally open from 10.30am-3pm everyday and open on Tuesday evenings in the Old Convent of Mercy, Borris-in-Ossory, Co Laois. They are happy to welcome new members. Contact Michael Ward on 086-355 6223 or call down during opening hours.
