The farmer protest in Dublin city centre went on into Tuesday tonight with the gardaí advising that a number of roads in the area are to remain closed until further notice.

Tractors continue to block a number of roads around Merrion Square and St Stephen's Green. Up to 300 farmers and 100 tractors were in Dublin on Tuesday to protest over beef prices and carbon taxes, among other issues.

On Tuesday night, An Garda Síochána said Stephen's Green North is closed with tractors blocking from Hume St to the top of Kildare St.

“It is anticipated that this protest will continue through the night and into the morning of Wednesday 27 November 2019.

“Gardaí can advise that the following roads are now closed and will remain closed until further notice: Kevin St, Cuffe St, Kildare St, Merrion Square South, Dawson St, Merrion Row.

“Diversions are in place to facilitate the flow of traffic for motorists,” a Garda spokesperson said late on Tuesday night.

Blocked in

RTÉ News is reporting tonight that farmers protesting have blocked the Merrion Square exit to Leinster House, with several members and staff of the Oireachtas unable to leave.

On Tuesday evening, farmers at the protest said they were refusing to leave Dublin until they got a meeting with Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed. It is understood that a senior figure in Minister Creed’s team offered to meet the farmers. However, they said they only wanted to see the minister.

While Kildare St is cordoned off, the tractorcade was offered the opportunity to pass by the Dáil but farmers were unwilling to do this until they had talked to the minister.
