CELEBRATE Biddy’s Day in Killorglin, Co Kerry, on 8 February. The Biddy is honoured in the mid-Kerry region every year – a celebration similar to going on the Wren on St Stephen’s Day. Biddy groups visit rural houses and public houses carrying a Brídeóg with them. This ensures the evil spirits are kept away from humans and animals during the coming year. Receiving a visit from the Biddy guarantees good luck and prosperity and to not be visited was considered a terrible slight. This is a free event and the highlight of the festival is the torch-lit Parade of the Biddy through Killorglin town and the colourful King of the Biddies contest. For more information see www.reeksdistrict.com.
EXPERIENCE the Spike Cello Festival from 7 to 9 February in venues around Dublin city centre. This alternative cello festival is back for its fourth year. The programme includes world-class cellists from home and abroad as they find increasingly weird and wonderful ways of playing with cellos. These artists will give audiences the opportunity to experience the variety of cello music from around the globe. There will be everything from concerts to yoga cello to activities for younger people. For more information see www.spikecellofest.com.
