Last Monday’s general cattle sale at Kilmallock Mart saw a large entry of about 900 cattle on offer. Denis Kirby of Kilmallock Mart said that the sale was exactly twice as big as the same sale the previous year.

There was an entry of over 210 cull cows on offer and Denis said that these were a well improved trade on the same time last year.

This Jersey cross bull calf, born 24/11/2019, sold for €75.

Friesian cull cows sold mainly from €1.10/kg to €1.30/kg and averaged at over €1.20/kg. Some well-fleshed Friesian cows sold for more than €1.40/kg.

The majority of cows sold were dry since December and were in relatively good condition, which also helped prices.

This Limousin cross cow, born 2015 and weighing 640kg sold for €1,040 (€1.63/kg).

Continental cull cows sold to a top price of €2.10/kg, with the majority of stores making from €1.40/kg to €1.65/kg.

Denis said that farmers were particularly active for store cattle, with plenty of buyers present for all types of bullocks and heifers. Better-quality stores sold to €2.25/kg, with the majority of continentals making from €2.10/kg to €2.20/kg.

Denis said that Angus and Hereford stores were a very strong trade also, with the majority selling from €1.90/kg to €2.10/kg for top-quality types.

This pair of Angus cross bulls, born June 2019 and weighing 365kg sold for €700 each (€1.92/kg).

Light runner calves were a well improved trade, with farmer buyers and exporters active for all types. Friesians from 200kg to 300kg that were selling from €1.20/kg to €1.30/kg last autumn were selling this week from €1.50/kg to a top of €1.80/kg.

These five Belgian Blue cross weanling bullocks, born March 2019 and weighing 302kg sold for €595 each (€1.97/kg).

The calf trade was quite strong, with farmer buyers dominating. Friesian bull calves sold mainly from €50 to €100, with strong Friesians selling to as much as €190/head. There were some plain, young Friesian bull calves which made less than €50/head, but there was only a few of these.

Angus and Hereford calves were met with strong demand and prices, with the majority selling from €180 to €300/head, with some three-quarter weaned Herefords making up to €360/head.

This Hereford cross heifer calf, born 03/12/2019 sold for €190.

Along with the usual cattle sale, there was a dairy entry of about 70 cows and heifers. Denis said that demand for these was quite strong also, with plenty of farmers active for well-bred young cows and heifers.

This Hereford heifer, born 21/01/2020 sold for €180.

Prices topped at €1,600/head, which was paid for an in-calf heifer.

Commission rates are €3 for calves and 1.4% for adult cattle with no entry fee to the seller and €9.30 upwards to the buyer.
