Over a foot of rain has fallen in parts of the west to date this year, with Claremorris, Co Mayo, receiving 402mm of rain in January and February.
Figures from Met Éireann weather stations show 367.5mm has fallen at Knock Airport to date and at Teagasc’s Newford Farm, Athenry, Co Galway, 340.5mm of rain has fallen.
Some 290.1mm has fallen in Mount Dillon, Co Roscommon, and 280.5mm at Shannon Airport.
Successive storms
The west and northwest are worst affected by the increased amount of rainfall which is the result of two successive storms and heavier than normal rainfall over the last number of weeks.
The rainfall has resulted in the River Shannon, River Suck and other rivers bursting their banks and submerging farmland. More rain is forecast later in the week and into the weekend, especially in the west.
