Bandwagons
Essentially this podcast does exactly what it says on the tin. Co-hosts Bríd Browne and Fionnuala Jones “jump on the bandwagon” each week, ie discuss something topical. It could be a hit TV show, a worldwide movement or some craze or phase. The great thing about this format is there’s loads of scope for things to talk about and content is always fresh. Also, you tend to have a fair idea from the title whether the theme is going to interest you or not, so you can pick and choose the ones you like.
Happy Place
Happy Place is English presenter Fearne Cotton’s podcast. She interviews people about life, love, loss and everything in between, as the guests reveal what happiness means to them. However, given that it is Fearne Cotton and she is very high-profile herself, the guests usually aren’t ordinary Joe Soaps. They tend to be pretty famous themselves, with the likes of Joe Wicks, George Ezra and Alicia Keyes appearing already this year.
The Stand
Former professional soccer player and pundit Eamon Dunphy presents The Stand; a sport, current affairs and culture podcast. The beauty of this podcast is quantity and length. There are up to six new episodes a week and for those who like their podcasts a little shorter, the episodes are around 30 minutes each. There’s an eclectic mix of topics, but Eamon pulls them off well and The Stand is regularly in and around the top 10 of the Irish podcast charts.
GAA Gold – Na Scéalta
Here’s one for all the gaeilgeoirs and aspiring gaeilgeoirs out there. This bilingual podcast was recently launched by Spórt TG4 and is available on their YouTube page. Its 10 episodes will focus on the biggest GAA games and stories of the 80s, an episode for each year. Well-known players who participated in these games will be interviewed and a special guest will highlight some of the most popular stories from the time.
Ger Power, Kerry football captain 1980, appeared on the first episode of GAA Gold – Na Scéalta.
Grounded
Broadcaster Louis Theroux is well-known for his in-depth programmes on interesting and often out there topics. If you like his television documentaries then you are definitely going to like this podcast. The premise is that Louis is using lockdown to interview high-profile people he always wanted to speak with. It was just launched recently, so there’s not a whole pile of episodes. However, even though it’s fledgling, it’s proving very popular.
All of these podcast are available on iTunes and Spotify unless it’s stated otherwise. Don’t forget The Irish Farmers Journal has a weekly podcast that can be accessed online. It’s uploaded on Wednesday and is available on iTunes and Spotify.
