A farmer in Co Cork was shocked to find a truckload of builder’s rubble and domestic waste dumped on his farm this week.
“A small truckload of rubbish was dumped inside our gate containing skip bags, builder’s rubble, and domestic waste," dairy farmer Victor O’Sullivan told the Irish Farmers Journal.
He said the illegal dumping was indicative of a "total lack of respect".
A member of An Garda Síochána visited the farm this morning and found a number of letters with Cork city addresses among the waste.
O’Sullivan said: “The Garda believes someone may have went around the city offering to dispose of the waste and subsequently brought it all here.
"It’s totally despicable to see this happen to our land. We run a busy dairy farm here and there isn’t a lot of spare time for cleaning up someone else’s mess.
“I contacted the environmental department of Cork County Council and they said because it’s inside my gate it’s likely I will have dispose of it myself. If they saw that from the roadside I could be penalized for having an illegal dump.”
Offal dumping
O’Sullivan said: “Littering on the roadside is common in the area but this scale of dumping hasn’t happened before.
"A couple of weeks ago a wheelbarrow of offal was dumped on the side of the road near our farm. Who would drive around with that in the car and then dump it on the road?
“We do our best to keep our farm clean. It’s disheartening to see this level of disregard from others. It’s a total lack of respect.”
