It’s crucial that the recently announced beef fund money gets out to farmers as soon as possible and tha the full €50m is spent, IFA president Tim Cullinan has said.
The comment comes as details of the beef aid package are confirmed by Minister for Agriculture Dara Calleary.
Farmers can claim up to €10,000, with the scheme open to all animals aged over eight months, including all grades of dairy cows.
Welcome announcement
The scheme had been announced in June in recognition of the difficulties that beef finishers had endured as a result of Brexit and COVID-19 disruption.
The IFA president welcomed the announcement from the Minister and called for the full aid package to be spent.
“There should be a provision to increase the payment per animal if there is any underspend.”
The scheme is expected to pay €100/head on all eligible cattle slaughtered during the reference period from 1 February to 12 June this year.
IFA national livestock chair Brendan Golden said the fund will be a significant boost for the autumn cattle trade and encouraged farmers to apply once the scheme opens on 19 August.
