The conditions around the beef fund scheme are straightforward and inclusive, in that it is open to all farmers who sent cattle to factories during the reference period, Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) president Pat McCormack has said.

The €50m beef aid package had been announced in June in recognition of the difficulties that beef finishers had endured as a result of Brexit and COVID-19 disruption.

The ICMSA has welcomed the confirmation on details of the scheme. McCormack feels the terms and conditions honour the agreement made at the beef talks last September, that all farmers would be included in future schemes.

Farmers can claim up to €10,000, with the scheme open to all animals aged over eight months, including all grades of dairy cows.

Disappointed farmers

The ICMSA president said that there will still be some disappointed farmers, particularly those who suffered heavy losses in 2019, a matter he insists still needs to be resolved.

McCormack has called on the Department to process applications in a straightforward way and issue payment as quickly as possible.

“It would be a very good idea for the Department to proactively contact those farmers eligible for the scheme by text and advise them to apply for this scheme.

“We’re coming into the period where farm bills are traditionally settled up and it would be a huge plus to have this money available for these cashflow requirements,” he said.
