Lakeland and Tipperary Co-op have bounced off the bottom of the monthly milk league as both lifted July price 0.13c/kgMS (1c/l) and hence take up a cosy mid-table place in division two this month.

This leaves Glanbia close to the bottom of the July table, with just two relatively small players ranked lower – Centenary Thurles, which sells most of its milk to Glanbia, and north Cork-based Boherbue, which sells most of its milk to Mondelez in Rathmore for chocolate crumb.

Positive trend

The steady positive trend initiated in June, when all 14 dairy processors lifted milk prices, continued into July. However, only five have lifted their July price – Dairygold, Aurivo, Arrabawn, Lakeland and Tipperary Co-op. Dairygold lifted July price by 0.5c/l (0.7 c/kgMS) to take it ahead of Glanbia.

There is no change at the top, with nobody able to match the west Cork Co-ops. It all means the average price paid out for July was €4.13/kg milk solids at 3.45% protein and 4.10% fat or 29.3c/l excluding VAT at base 3.3% protein and 3.6% fat.

Aurivo holds its ground at the top of division two, cementing a couple of good months for western farmers.

Arrabawn lifted its game considerably last month (+1.5 c/l), after a poor April and May price, and it has followed up the June lift with a July bounce (+0.5c/l).

This all means most of the milk from the three big players – Kerry, Glanbia and Dairygold – was purchased at a base price of between €4.00/kgMS and €4.10/kgMS, between 28.5c/l and 29.0c/l excluding VAT.
