Agri food exports rose by €594m or 353,357t in 2019, the Department’s Market Access Report 2019-2020 has shown.

China remains the fifth most popular destination for Irish agri foods. The value exported to China increased by 16% from €794m to just under €918m in 2019.

Pigmeat represented the largest element of this increase, with exports increasing by almost €100m in 2019.

Retaining access

The report provides an overview of progress made in increasing access for food and drink exports to international markets outside of Europe.

Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue said: “The work on market access is focused not only on the opening of access to new international markets, but also on the equally challenging work of enhancing and retaining that access.”

Agricultural exports to countries outside of Europe have increased from approximately €3.7bn to €4.3bn in the period 2016 to 2019.

Virtual trade

Meanwhile, Minister McConalogue and Minister of State Martin Heydon are engaging in a series of market development events on international markets, in collaboration with Bord Bia and the Irish Embassy network.

In the coming weeks, the Department and Bord Bia will host a dairy-focused virtual trade mission to southeast Asia, covering Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

CEO of Bord Bia Tara McCarthy said: “The southeast Asia region is of strategic importance to our dairy client companies, importing up to 2.6m metric tonnes of dairy ingredients from global markets in 2019.

“We have secured approximately 250 of the most interested buyers who are ready to do business, following a thorough canvassing and pre-screening process.

“The 13 Irish dairy exporters, who will take part in online business-to-business meetings, will be front and centre during these five days, allowing us to build Ireland’s reputation as a global player in sustainable dairy solutions to key buyers.”
