A mobile farm visit and a €500 cash prize are up for grabs in a new Agri Aware competition for primary school classes that brings the ‘Dig In!’ resource to life.

Supported by the Department of Agriculture, Agri Aware launched its revitalised ‘Dig In! Learning About Life on the Countryside’ resource aimed at primary school students in November 2020.

Teachers are asked to complete one activity from the following six topics; the Irish farmer, cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry or cereals and grasses.

Unique experience

Agri Aware chair Alan Jagoe has encouraged teachers and parents to use Dig In! as a remote and home-school learning resource.

“Dig In! brings to life all aspects of modern farming in a child-friendly, innovative and educational way.

“It is sure to be useful to parents and teachers during this period of home-schooling.

“The mobile farm visit is a unique outdoor classroom experience which educates young and old about the different farm animals and their role in producing quality food,” he said.

Dig In! is divided into four modules according to levels of ability.

Each module contains 20 lesson plans and corresponding activities.

Children will gain insight into all aspects of Irish farming, from learning how animals are reared to understanding the role hedgerows play to promote biodiversity on Irish farms.

The competition is open to all primary schools and entries close on Friday 30 April.

Teachers can submit evidence that their class has completed the activities by visiting Agri Aware.
