The practice of leasing out entitlements has come in for criticism from young farmers in the last week.
Many see it as a barrier to increasing production, however for older farmers and retired farmers or those who are not currently active, it is a means of income.
At an IFA regional meeting in Connacht, Sligo farmer Trevor Boland called on the IFA to take a position on the practice of leasing entitlements.
He said these entitlements should go “back to genuine active farmers rather than to farmers who were farming 20 years ago and are now not farming at all."
“It’s preventing genuine active farmers getting in on these entitlements and using them to increase their farming activity,” he said.
He was one of a number of farmers who raised the issue at meetings in the last week.
