It is an extension of the existing Croí Cónaithe Scheme, which provides for the refurbishment of derelict and vacant properties into principal private dwellings in towns and villages. It will now be extended to derelict and vacant one-off rural houses.
The grant provides for up to €50,000 for derelict houses and up to €30,000 for vacant houses.
The announcement was made at the National Ploughing Championships this week by Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, Peter Burke.
Minister O’Brien said that through the extension of the scheme they want to provide assistance to farmers’ sons and daughters who want to live on the farms.
“We believe that there is an opportunity in our remote areas and rural areas, where there are older farmhouses that were previously lived in that sons and daughters would like to live in,” he said.
Minister O’Brien added that there are no plans at present to extend the scheme to encompass farm buildings.
“We’re not looking at other farm properties as of yet. We want to get the scheme moving. I’m also conscious that there is a lot of additional work for our local authorities,” he said.
