When did you set up your business and why?
I hadn’t done too much art since leaving art college (NCAD) over 10 years ago, but during a difficult pregnancy I had turned to art, sketching from bed as a bit of relief from being so ill.
Then when my maternity leave was coming to an end, I knew I wasn’t ready to return to my corporate job. I took a risk and quit. Little did I know a couple of months later the pandemic would hit.
While we were all at home anyway, I took the time to set up my little art business, creating paintings and I’ve more recently delved deeper into graphic design to expand my greetings card and print range.
Can you explain your process?
In my paintings, I concentrate (mainly) on the flora and fauna of Ireland. I get a lot of my inspiration from my hometown on the Dingle Peninsula in Co Kerry.
Kerry-based artist Hannah Sayers.
I work hard to produce quality products, while striving to be environmentally focused. My greetings cards are 100% plastic-free and come with a biodegradable envelope. I’m proudly trying to be as environmentally conscious as possible.
I work with acrylic paint and a variety of mixed media. I love playing and exploring different mediums on vibrant abstract backgrounds, which I create based on my memories of landscapes at home.
My process is very free, I always do a small amount of planning, but mostly I have ideas in my head and I just go for it and get working on pieces.
I often find at night, when my mind is at its busiest, I get ideas and I tend to jot them down before I put brush to canvas the next day.
What is your best seller?
My best seller would be my 'Life on the rock' art print or any of my puffins to be honest. I really loved that collection too.
Hannah Sayer's 'Life on the rock' print is her best seller.
Puffins are just so much fun to paint; seeing their little personalities come through in the piece.
What is it about your business that brings you joy?
There are so many things about my business that bring me joy.
I love creating, that feeling when inspiration strikes and you can’t wait to get home and crack out a new canvas.
Also being able to be home with my son: I work around his schedule, which means I have time for lots of toddler arts and crafts too.
What are your hopes for 2023?
My hopes for the rest of 2023 are to keep expanding my greetings card range and hopefully find some lovely shops that might want to be stockists. I’ve also just started work on a really exciting collection.
What advice would you give to another start-up business?
Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. They say if you do something you love you will never work a day in your life, but the truth is you will work 24/7.
The key is to make sure you find the joy in what you do and make sure it is authentically you. That way you’ll be excited to get up and promote your brand every day.
